Engine Options
Which engine does your 4Runner have?
The 4Runner has had six generations since 1984. The first (1984–1989) and second (1990–1995) used versions of the 2.4L 22R four-cylinder — carbureted at launch, fuel-injected as the 22R-E from 1985 and turbocharged as the 22R-TE for 1986–1987 — with the 3.0L 3VZ-E V6 added for 1988. Then came the 2.7L four-cylinder and 3.4L V6 of the third (1996–2002), the 4.0L V6 and 4.7L V8 of the fourth (2003–2009), the 4.0L V6 of the fifth (2010–2024), joined by a 2.7L four-cylinder for 2010 only, and the 2.4L turbo four-cylinder, with or without the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, from 2025.
The table below lists what was offered when. The 4.7L V8 changed for 2005 and the 4.0L V6 for 2010, so we confirm the engine from your VIN rather than from the code alone.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L four-cylinder | Code: 22R | Carbureted. The only engine for 1984; sold alongside the 22R-E from 1985. |
| 2.4L four-cylinder | Code: 22R-E | Fuel-injected, from 1985. |
| 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder | Code: 22R-TE | 1986–1987; replaced by the V6. |
| 3.0L V6 | Code: 3VZ-E | 1988–1989. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L four-cylinder | Code: 22R-E | Fuel-injected, carried over from the first generation. |
| 3.0L V6 | Code: 3VZ-E | All years. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L four-cylinder | Code: 3RZ-FE | 1996–2000; timing chain. Dropped for 2001. |
| 3.4L V6 | Code: 5VZ-FE | All years; timing belt. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0L V6 | Code: 1GR-FE | All years, single VVT-i. |
| 4.7L V8 | Code: 2UZ-FE | 2003–2004 without VVT-i; 2005–2009 with VVT-i. The two versions are not drop-in replacements for each other. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0L V6 | Code: 1GR-FE | Dual VVT-i, all trims and years. |
| 2.7L four-cylinder | Code: 2TR-FE | 2010 only, two-wheel drive. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder | Code: T24A-FTS | i-FORCE, the standard engine. |
| 2.4L turbo hybrid (i-FORCE MAX) | Code: T24A-FTS | Same engine with a motor between the engine and transmission. Standard on Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter; optional on TRD Off-Road and Limited. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which 2.4L — 1984–1995
The carbureted 22R, the fuel-injected 22R-E and the 22R-TE turbo share their size but are not drop-in replacements for one another. Give us the code from the engine or your VIN and we will match the right one.
Which 4.7L
The V8 gained VVT-i for 2005. A 2005–2009 engine is not a drop-in for a 2003–2004 truck, so we match the year as well as the 2UZ-FE code.
Which 4.0L
The 1GR-FE had single VVT-i from 2003 to 2009 and Dual VVT-i from 2010. Both versions carry the same code, so we match by model year rather than by the code alone.
Hybrid — 2025 on
The i-FORCE MAX uses the same T24A-FTS turbo four-cylinder with a motor between the engine and transmission and a battery. Tell us if your 4Runner is a hybrid.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and whether the truck is a hybrid before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common 4Runner engine problems
Timing chain — 2.4L four-cylinders, 1984–1995
The guides that keep the 22R family’s timing chain in place wear and break with age. The slack chain then saws into the timing cover and can wear through to the coolant passages in it. A rattle from the front of the engine, loudest just after a cold start, is the warning, and caught early it is a chain-and-guide job rather than a new engine.
Head gaskets — 3.0L V6, 1988–1995
Head-gasket failure is the best-known fault of the 3VZ-E. Overheating, coolant loss and white exhaust smoke are the signs, and driving on a failed gasket can warp the cylinder heads.
Exhaust manifold leaks — 4.7L V8, 2003–2009
The 2UZ-FE’s cast-iron exhaust manifolds crack and their studs break with repeated heat cycles. A ticking noise from the engine bay on a cold start that fades as the engine warms is the usual sign, and it is a manifold-and-stud repair, not a reason to replace the engine.

FAQ
4Runner engine questions, answered
Which engines did the 1984–1995 4Runner have?
A 2.4L four-cylinder throughout — the carbureted 22R at launch, the fuel-injected 22R-E from 1985 and the 22R-TE turbo for 1986–1987 — and the 3.0L 3VZ-E V6 from 1988. Send us your VIN or the code from the engine and we will match it.
Will a 4.0L from a 2010 or later 4Runner fit my 2003–2009 truck?
Not as a direct swap. Both are coded 1GR-FE, but the 2010-on engine has Dual VVT-i, with variable timing on the exhaust cams as well as the intake. Match the year range, not just the code, and send us your VIN so we can confirm.
Which 4Runners have the V8?
Only the fourth generation, 2003–2009, which offered the 4.7L 2UZ-FE alongside the 4.0L V6. The V8 was not carried over to the 2010 truck, and every 4Runner since has had a V6 or a four-cylinder.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
