Engine Options

Which engine does your Prius have?

Every Prius is a hybrid, so its engine is always a hybrid-specific unit: the 1.5L 1NZ-FXE in the 2001–2009 cars and the Prius c, the 1.8L 2ZR-FXE from 2010 to 2022 (including the Prius v, Plug-in and Prime), and the 2.0L M20A-FXS in the 2023-on Prius and Prius Prime.

The table below lists what was offered when, by generation and body. The engine works with the hybrid transaxle, inverter and battery of its generation, so we confirm the generation and body from your VIN before we quote.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 1.5L

The 1NZ-FXE went into the 2001–2003 Prius, the 2004–2009 Prius and the 2012–2019 Prius c, each rated differently. Match the generation and body, not just the code.

Which 1.8L

The 2ZR-FXE served the 2010–2015 Prius, the Prius v, the Plug-in, the 2016–2022 Prius and the Prime. The 2016-on cars pair it with a different transaxle (P610 rather than P410), so we match by generation.

Not a Corolla engine

The 2ZR-FXE and M20A-FXS are hybrid engines also used in the Corolla Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid, but they are not the gasoline 2ZR-FE, 2ZR-FAE or M20A-FKS. A standard Corolla engine is not a substitute.

The engine is only part of the system

A Prius that has shut its hybrid system down or will not start may have an inverter or battery fault rather than a bad engine — the 2010–2015 inverter is a known failure — so have the hybrid system diagnosed before buying an engine.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, generation and body — Prius, c, v, Plug-in or Prime — before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Prius engine problems

Oil consumption — 2ZR-FXE, 2010–2015

Excessive oil use is the most-reported engine complaint on these cars: CarComplaints lists 137 reports for the 2010 Prius and 34 for the 2011. Watch the level, because a hybrid engine that runs low fails like any other.

Head-gasket failure — 2ZR-FXE, 2010–2015

Head-gasket failure on the 1.8L is widely reported by owners and independent hybrid shops, who often link it to an EGR cooler clogged with carbon. We have found no Toyota recall, warranty extension or class action for it, so treat the cause as unconfirmed and inspect any engine you buy.

Inverter failure — 2010–2015 Prius and 2012–2017 Prius v

Overheated transistors in the inverter’s power module shut the hybrid system down and can stall the car. Recalls 14V-053 and 18V-684 cover it, and Toyota’s Customer Confidence Program now covers the inverter on these cars for 20 years with unlimited mileage. It is not an engine fault; check it before buying an engine.

Wiring-harness chafing — 2016–2018

The engine wiring harness can chafe where it meets the hybrid power control unit, short out and in the worst case start a fire. Recall 18V-579 covers it; it is a harness repair, not an engine fault.

FAQ

Prius engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Prius have?

The 1.5L 1NZ-FXE through 2009 and in every Prius c; the 1.8L 2ZR-FXE from 2010 to 2022, including the v, Plug-in and Prime; and the 2.0L M20A-FXS from 2023. Send us your VIN and we’ll confirm.

Is the Prius head-gasket problem a recall?

No. Head-gasket failure on 2010–2015 cars is widely reported by owners and independent hybrid shops, but we have found no Toyota recall, warranty extension or class action covering it. The same cars do have inverter recalls (14V-053, 18V-684) and a brake-booster recall (13V-235), which are separate.

Is it worth putting an engine in an older Prius?

Often, if the hybrid battery and inverter are sound. Toyota’s inverter cover on 2010–2015 cars runs 20 years, and the hybrid battery warranty is 8 years or 100,000 miles on 2019 and earlier cars (10 years or 150,000 in CARB states) and 10 years or 150,000 miles from 2020. Check what cover is left before deciding.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
