Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Tacoma have?
The Tacoma has used four-, five-, six- and now eight-speed automatics, each tied to a particular engine and generation, and a manual has stayed available on most four-wheel-drive trucks.
Toyota’s codes tell you the drivetrain: an F on the end means four-wheel drive. The table below shows what was fitted when.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Five-speed manual | Code: W59 | 2.4L two-wheel-drive trucks. |
| Five-speed manual | Code: R150F | 3.4L V6 four-wheel-drive trucks. |
| Five-speed manual | 2.7L trucks. | |
| Four-speed automatic | Code: A43D | 2.4L two-wheel-drive trucks to 2000. |
| Four-speed automatic | Code: A340E / A340F | 2.7L and 3.4L trucks; A340F on 4WD. PreRunner and Double Cab were automatic only. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Five-speed manual | Code: R155 / R155F | 2.7L trucks; R155F on 4WD. |
| Six-speed manual | Code: RA60 | 4.0L V6 two-wheel-drive trucks, including the X-Runner. |
| Six-speed manual | 4.0L V6 four-wheel-drive trucks. | |
| Four-speed automatic | Code: A340E / A340F | 2.7L trucks; A340F on 4WD. |
| Five-speed automatic | Code: A750E / A750F | 4.0L V6; A750F on 4WD. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Five-speed manual | Code: R156F | 2.7L four-wheel drive, 2016–2017 only. |
| Six-speed manual | Code: RC62F | 3.5L V6 four-wheel drive. |
| Six-speed automatic | Code: AC60E / AC60F | Both engines; AC60F on 4WD. |

|---|---|---|
| Eight-speed automatic | Code: AL80E / AL80F | 2.4L turbo; AL80F on 4WD. |
| Eight-speed hybrid transmission | i-FORCE MAX. The motor takes the place of the torque converter. | |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Two- or four-wheel drive
Toyota builds separate units for each — A340E and A340F, AC60E and AC60F — and they do not interchange. Tell us which your truck has.
Match the engine
In the first two generations the four-cylinder and the V6 used different automatics. A unit from behind a V6 is not right for a four-cylinder truck.
Hybrid — 2024 on
The i-FORCE MAX eight-speed has an electric motor in place of the torque converter. It is not the same unit as the standard eight-speed.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Tacoma transmission problems
Shift complaints — 2016–2017 six-speed automatic
Delayed engagement, harsh 1–2 shifts and gear hunting at highway speed were common, especially with the V6. Toyota’s fix was updated engine and transmission software, which is worth trying before a replacement.
Torque converter shudder — 2005–2015 V6 five-speed
A shudder at about 35–50 mph under light throttle, usually from degraded fluid. In advanced cases the converter clutch is worn and the unit needs work.
Age and neglect — four-speed automatics
Delayed engagement, a flare on the 2–3 shift when hot and clogged solenoids show up on high-mileage A340 units, usually well past 120,000 miles.

FAQ
Tacoma transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Tacoma have?
It depends on the generation, engine and drivetrain: four-speed automatics and five-speed manuals in 1995–2004, four- or five-speed automatics and five- or six-speed manuals in 2005–2015, the six-speed automatic or manual in 2016–2023, and the eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual from 2024. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Can I fit a 4WD transmission in a 2WD Tacoma?
No. Toyota builds separate two- and four-wheel-drive versions of each transmission, and they do not interchange.
Does the 2024 manual work with the hybrid?
No. The six-speed manual is offered only with the non-hybrid 2.4L turbo, and only on four-wheel-drive trucks.
Does a replacement transmission need programming?
On 2016-on trucks it may. Many shift complaints on the six-speed were fixed with software updates, so ask your installer to check the software after fitting.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
