Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Tundra have?
The Tundra started with the A340 four-speed automatic, moved to five- and six-speed automatics tied to each engine, and since 2022 has used a ten-speed behind the twin-turbo V6 and the hybrid. Manuals were offered only with the V6, and only through 2006; no V8 Tundra had one.
The table below shows what was fitted when. An F on the end of a Toyota code means four-wheel drive, and in the second generation three different automatics were in production at once, so we confirm from your VIN.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Four-speed automatic | Code: A340E / A340F | 3.4L V6 and 4.7L V8, 2000–2004; A340F on 4WD. |
| Five-speed automatic | Code: A750E / A750F | 4.0L V6 and 4.7L V8, 2005–2006; A750F on 4WD. |
| Five-speed manual | 3.4L V6 only, 2000–2004. | |
| Six-speed manual | 4.0L V6 only, 2005–2006. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Five-speed automatic | Code: A750E / A750F | 4.0L V6 and 4.7L V8, 2007–2009; A750F on 4WD. |
| Five-speed automatic | 4.0L V6, 2010–2014. | |
| Six-speed automatic | Code: A760E / A760F | 4.6L V8, 2010–2019; A760F on 4WD. |
| Six-speed automatic | Code: AB60E / AB60F | 5.7L V8, all years; AB60F on 4WD. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ten-speed automatic | Twin-turbo V6, every non-hybrid truck. | |
| Ten-speed hybrid transmission | i-FORCE MAX, with the motor-generator between the engine and the transmission. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Two- or four-wheel drive
Toyota builds separate units for each — A750E and A750F, AB60E and AB60F — and they do not interchange. Tell us which your truck has.
Match the engine
From 2010 the second-generation truck had three automatics at once: the five-speed with the 4.0L V6, the A760 six-speed with the 4.6L V8 and the AB60 six-speed with the 5.7L. A unit from behind the wrong engine is not right for your truck.
Watch the 2005 and 2010 changeovers
A 2004 and a 2005 truck look alike but have the four-speed and the five-speed respectively, and a 2009 4.7L and a 2010 4.6L have different six-speeds. Model year and engine together identify the unit.
Hybrid — 2022 on
The i-FORCE MAX puts a motor-generator between the engine and the ten-speed. Tell us if your truck is a hybrid so we quote the right unit.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Tundra transmission problems
Control software recall — 2022–2024
A fault in the transmission control software can let the truck creep while the shifter is in neutral. Toyota corrected it with a software update under recall 24V-125, so it does not call for a transmission.
Limp mode from the air-injection system — 2007–2011 V8s
When the secondary air-injection pumps or valves fail, the check-engine light comes on and the truck drops into limp mode, which feels like a transmission fault but is not one. Toyota extended the warranty on the system to 10 years or 150,000 miles on 2007–2010 trucks and covered 2011 under warranty enhancement ZG6.
Stalling from the fuel pump — 2018–2020
A failing Denso low-pressure fuel pump stalls the engine, which can be mistaken for the transmission dropping out of gear. Toyota recalled trucks from around 2018 to 2020 (recalls 20V-012 and 20V-682). Have the recall checked first.

FAQ
Tundra transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Tundra have?
It depends on the engine and year: the A340 four-speed to 2004, the A750 five-speed with the 4.0L and 4.7L from 2005, the A760 six-speed with the 4.6L from 2010, the AB60 six-speed with every 5.7L, and the ten-speed on all 2022-on trucks. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Did the Tundra come with a manual?
Only with the V6: a five-speed with the 3.4L from 2000 to 2004 and a six-speed with the 4.0L for 2005 and 2006. No V8 Tundra was built with a manual, and none has been offered since 2006.
My 2022–2024 Tundra stalls or knocks. Is it the transmission?
Probably not. Those trucks have been recalled for engine main-bearing failure (24V-381, 25V-767 and 26V-320), which causes knock, stalling and no-starts, and for transmission control software (24V-125). Have a dealer check both by VIN before ordering a transmission.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
