Transmission Options

Which transmission does your RAV4 have?

The RAV4 ran four-speed automatics behind its four-cylinders from 1996 until 2012, with a five-speed behind the 2006–2012 V6, then a six-speed for 2013–2018 and an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic for 2019–2025. A five-speed manual was offered from 1996 to 2005. The RAV4 Hybrid, Prime and Plug-in Hybrid use electronically controlled hybrid transaxles rather than a gearbox.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions are different units, and so are the four-cylinder and V6 versions, so we confirm the transmission from your VIN before we quote.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Front- or all-wheel drive

Every gasoline RAV4 automatic, and the five-speed manual, came in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions that are not interchangeable — U241E and U140F, U151E and U151F, U760E and U760F, UB80E and UB80F.

Four-cylinder or V6, 2006–2012

The V6 used the U151 five-speed while the four-cylinders kept the four-speed. Match the engine, not just the year.

Hybrid transaxles

The RAV4 Hybrid’s P314 (2016–2018) and P710 (2019–2025) and the transaxle in the Prime and 2025 Plug-in Hybrid are hybrid transaxles containing the motor-generators, not gearboxes, and each belongs to its own hybrid system. Tell us the model year and which hybrid you have.

2001–2003: fix the ECM first

On 2001–2003 automatics a faulty engine control module causes harsh shifting and damages the transaxle. A used transmission fitted behind the original bad ECM will fail the same way, so have the module replaced at the same time.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drive type and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common RAV4 transmission problems

Transaxle damage from a faulty ECM — 2001–2003

The engine control module can command harsh shifts that damage the automatic transaxle, showing up as harsh or delayed shifting with a check-engine light. Toyota extended cover on the ECM and transaxle under a customer support program that has since expired. Replace the ECM with the transmission or the new unit will fail again.

Hesitation and lurching — eight-speed, 2019–2025

Hesitation when pulling away and lurching or harsh shifts at low speed are frequent owner complaints about the eight-speed. Ask a dealer whether a software update applies before assuming the transmission is worn.

FAQ

RAV4 transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my RAV4 have?

Four-cylinder RAV4s had a four-speed automatic through 2012 — the U140F with all-wheel drive from 2001 and the U241E with front-wheel drive for 2006–2012 — or a five-speed manual through 2005. The 2006–2012 V6 had a U151E or U151F five-speed, 2013–2018 models a U760E or U760F six-speed, and 2019–2025 gasoline models a UB80E or UB80F eight-speed. Hybrids have a hybrid transaxle. Send us your VIN and we’ll confirm.

Can I replace just the transmission on my 2001–2003 RAV4?

Not safely. The harsh shifting on these years starts with the engine control module, and a replacement transaxle behind the original ECM fails again. Replace both; the Toyota program that covered them has expired.

Will a transmission from a later RAV4 fit my 1996–2000 model?

No. The 1996–2000 RAV4 has the 3S-FE engine and transmissions of its own, and the 2001 redesign brought a new engine family with different units. Tell us the model year, the drive type and whether it is a manual or an automatic.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
